The Schengen 90/180-Day Rule for UK Citizens

The rule in one sentence

For a permitted short visit, the usual limit for a British citizen in the Schengen area is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. It is one allowance for the area as a whole, not 90 days per country.

How to count it

Write down every date you are physically in the Schengen area. The date you arrive counts. The date you leave counts. Add days across all Schengen countries: France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Greece and the other participating countries are not separate counters.

On each day of a planned visit, look back over the previous 180 days and count how many of those days were spent in Schengen. If the total would exceed 90, the itinerary needs to change or you need a different immigration route.

Example

Suppose you spend 20 days in France in January, 15 days in Spain in March, and 30 days across Italy and Germany in May. The total is 65 days, not 20 days in France plus a fresh allowance in each country. A later 30-day trip may exceed the limit depending on which earlier days still fall inside the rolling 180-day window.

This example is only an illustration. Use your real entry and exit dates, not rounded months.

Common mistakes

Mistake 1: Treating Schengen like a list of separate visas

Moving between France, Belgium and the Netherlands usually does not create a new border entry for the purpose of the allowance. Keep one area-wide record.

Mistake 2: Counting nights instead of calendar days

The border calculation is about dates, not hotel nights. A late arrival and an early departure can still use two days.

Mistake 3: Assuming a weekend outside Schengen resets the allowance

It does not. The window is rolling. A calculator needs your complete travel history, including earlier trips.

Mistake 4: Using a tourist allowance for work or residence

Visa-free short travel does not normally authorize paid work, long-term study or residence. Those plans should be checked with the national authority of the country where the activity will take place.

Countries outside Schengen

Ireland and Cyprus have their own arrangements, and the UK is outside the Schengen area. Do not assume that travelling to a non-Schengen country automatically gives you a new 90 days. It can change where you are physically located, but not the calculation of days already used.

How to plan responsibly

Keep copies of previous travel dates, leave a buffer rather than planning to the final possible day, and check passport validity for every country on the itinerary. Rules and border systems can change, so confirm the position with official EU and national sources shortly before departure.
